What's going on with ATLAS?
ATLAS Space Operations, Inc. has been awarded a five-year contract by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), significantly expanding access to satellite communications and data services. The contract, which includes one base year and four option years, was awarded on December 13th, 2016.
ATLAS will install and integrate a Remote Tracking Station (RTS) in Sunyani, Ghana. This RTS will be commissioned by NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) to support the launch and on-orbit operations of the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC-2) constellation. The COSMIC-2 constellation is currently scheduled to be launched in September 2017. The contract includes options for additional ground stations to be installed in remote locations in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
“ATLAS is very proud to have been chosen by NOAA NESDIS to support the COSMIC-2 program. We look forward to a successful working relationship with NOAA providing them affordable commercial TT&C services to their long list of current and future systems.” Said Sean McDaniel, President of ATLAS Space Operations, Inc.
The COSMIC-2 mission is a collaboration between NOAA, the United States Air Force and the National Space Organization of Taiwan, with the goal of obtaining Global Navigation Satellite System Radio Occultation (RO) Observations worldwide. COSMIC-2 is a follow-on mission to the COSMIC-1 constellation, and once completed will afford 12 satellites in low and high inclination orbits to collect nearly an order of magnitude more RO data. This will enable unprecedented research opportunities for hurricane analysis and prediction in the years to come.
